May Canoe Trip: Navigating the Colorado River

In May, our troop had planned an exciting overnight canoe trip on the Colorado River between Austin and Bastrop. However, Mother Nature had different plans, as impending storms on Saturday night forced us to pivot from the original campout plan. Instead of canceling the adventure, the troop adapted and embarked on a day canoe trip on the same river, launching from Bastrop and paddling downstream. This change in plans proved to be a great opportunity for the scouts to focus on learning and enjoying the day on the water.

The scouts quickly learned the basics of canoe navigation, including steering, paddling techniques, and how to work as a team to maneuver through the river’s twists and turns. They faced the challenge of managing their canoes in various water conditions, enhancing their confidence and skills along the way. Despite the change in plans, the scouts made the most of the experience, enjoying the scenic beauty of the river and the thrill of navigating their own canoes.

This impromptu day trip turned into a memorable learning experience, highlighting the scouts’ resilience and adaptability. Even though the original overnight plan was washed out by the weather, the troop showed that with a positive attitude and a bit of flexibility, any adventure can be a great one. A huge thank you to all the scouts and leaders who made this pivot possible and ensured a fun and educational day on the river!
