Kayaking Campout – May 2023

Troop 410 embarked on an unforgettable kayaking adventure to Matagorda Bay, and it was a blast! After a 3.5-hour journey, the troop arrived ready for an action-packed weekend.

Saturday morning kicked off with a group of enthusiastic scouts working diligently on their Kayaking merit badge. They honed their paddling skills and learned essential techniques for maneuvering through the water. It was impressive to witness their determination and progress!

In the afternoon, a large number of scouts delved into the fascinating world of Oceanography as they pursued their merit badge. Armed with scientific tools, they excitedly investigated the turbidity and salinity of the water. The scouts also had the chance to catch and examine intriguing algae and krill, gaining firsthand knowledge of marine life.

During their free time, the scouts made the most of the picturesque beach area. Some tried their luck at fishing, hoping for a big catch, while others ventured into crabbing. Many took the opportunity to explore the beach, uncovering hidden treasures and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

As the sun began to set on Saturday evening, the troop gathered around a crackling bonfire on the beach. The atmosphere was electric with anticipation as Finn, our Senior Patrol Leader, led the troop in the beloved copper coffee pot song. Groans of laughter filled the air when Colin, a talented storyteller, shared a hilarious tale that had everyone in stitches.

In a heartfelt moment, Finn and Colin took a step back and passed the torch of these cherished traditions to the younger scouts. They reminded the eager newcomers that this could be their last chance to experience such memorable campfire moments, urging them to carry on these customs in the future.

Despite the challenges posed by the blazing sun, persistent mosquitos, and occasional jellyfish encounters, this kayaking campout will be etched in the memories of Troop 410. It was an extraordinary adventure that showcased the scouts’ resilience, teamwork, and love for the great outdoors.
